This was an illustration of the famous Boudicca of the Icini tribe. She led the resistance against the invading Romans who had rescinded their promise. [She lost her social status and they raped her daughters so she was out for revenge.] After a victorious tour, however, the Romans defeated her army - probably from having more battle experience. Boudicca is famous for saying "Britons will never be slaves" and the account of her life was recorded by the Romans. This painting is filled with incredible detail with the imagined landscape of an ancient Britain. In this painting the slain figures bring the artist's own war experience to mind - he had witnessed battles in north Africa - perhaps this informed the painting. A similar palette to Cat. No. 0268. but no other connection.
