One of several sketches capturing the structure of the circus tent. These studies were later worked into a painting called 'The Circus' [Cat. No. 200] - the first to be undertaken in the 'squares technique'. Inspired partly by the location, Arles, which had been something of a place of pilgrimage for an artist who loved Van Gogh.
