Paul Benedict Brand
This artwork is

Pink Deckchair

In what appears to be quite an exotic location, the subject may have been the artist's second wife, Mary. 12 years his junior, after their motorcycle trip around Europe, she was 'swept off her feet' by a still older man, who allegedly was American, and about whom little is known. PBB told a fabled tale that she was 'found in bed with a yank'... however it has since come to light that this man was something of an imposter, and died leaving three passports with different identities(!). This was a post-war marriage so the popular prejudice that had arisen for people experiencing this situation was applied somewhat out of context. Nonetheless, it was a brief marriage, and thereafter Americans were generally treated with suspicion. (see painting 0297 "American Diplomacy")Signed PBB on top left.
