This print from a woodcut has clear influences from a classic Greek vase and the Garden of Eden. Although a depiction of a perfect family, there are some darker undertones in the offering the older child is making to the young one. In his youth, staying with a severe grandmother at Christmas time the artist was forced to give his "best present" to the deserving poor - a toy fire engine, an experience of disappointment that he never forgot.
