This is a sketch to prepare for the paintings of Petrouschka which at the time PBB believed would be his 'final work' - as it was he went on to paint another 6 paintings before his health failed. The freedom of movement is apparent in the sketches - every time he transposed work it lost some of its looseness, so this is a great example of the energy when first going about realising his vision.
