The second of three paintings, (see also Cat. Nos 0286 and 0288). In this scene 'The puppets come to life' (PBB). In the story the magician treats the puppets unkindly and while Petroushka loves the ballerina, she ignores him as she is in love with the Moor. Jealousy arises among the puppets, and they fight, the Moor dramatically kills Petroushka with a sabre.
