Also called "The Musicians", this is a fresco - Paul taught himself the skill of this technique in 1990 with only a book to help. In lieu of a lime-plastered wall he made his own lime-based surface. This and "The Rainmaker"(Cat. No. 0252) were the result. Two other works on this theme were painted (oil on board). See Cat. Nos. 0259, 0270, and sketch 1296. It is likely that this was inspired by a Radio 3 series on Early Music, as he would listen to this station all the time he spent in the studio. Several other works are illustrations of musical pieces - such as Peer Gynt, Petrushka, the Dance of the Capulets (Romeo and Juliet), the Fantastic Symphony, Salome, Carmina Burana and Sara la Baigneuse, and several on the depiction of musicians (Haslemere Music Society, the Trumpeter, and Concergebauw).
