The artist depicted this common several times. In this rendition you can see the regenerating species of gorse and heather (ling) in the foreground and the birch and pine saplings in the background as it regenerates, after having been used as a parade ground in WW2, with the surrounding area decimated by tank practice. It was also used in WW I as an airfield, hosting Canadian troops who named the camp "Superior" after the lake.
