Shown at Heatherly anniversary Exhibition, 1996, this work is based on the music by Carl Orff, depicting the powerful 'Wheel of Fortune'. The 1934 text is based on a nineteenth century presentation of medieval poetry, with a selection of twenty-four verses taken from three centuries, represented in twenty-five movements in five sections. Conceptually complex, the artist rose to the challenge of illustration the structure presented. Each little picture relates to a verse of the songs, the intricacies of each image relate to the stories within the music, and the whole was constructed to be hung as shown. The tree in the top centre was also painted in a separate work, a watercolour (Cat. No. 540).
