The King of Spain's daughter is a reference to Katherine of Aragon, who, in spite of the King's proclivities, was well loved by many of the people of Britain, especially those who resented the enforced protestantism with the break from Rome by Henry VIII. The incredible detail of this work indicates that he was entirely absorbed in the application of colour and form to the canvas in order to present this illustration. 'From the Nursery rhyme, of course, but contains a little joke' (PBB,1987). Signed:- PAUL BENEDICT BRAND (under each other).
