This is based on the play by Maeterlinck, which inspired Debussy, Sibelius and Faure. Here Gulaud discovers Melisande, in a detailed background. A late work which is skilfully crafted, though the artist did not consider it for inclusion in those submitted at the Mall Gallery competitions.
