Research in the '70s brought close examination of myths and legends of the Celts, including Tristan & Isolde, the White Goddess and others. This work is an illustration of a medieval poem that had roots in France and the South West. A love triangle with jealousy and betrayal that becomes resolved by love and in giving service to God.
P.B.B. writes "Part of the Celtic/Breton mythology. The full story can be read in 'The Ebony Tower' by John Fowles. In painting this there was an awkward time-warp to be grappled with hence the clothes and mixed architecture" (PBB, 1987). This time-warp was later utilised in the works on 'Early Music' (Cat. No.s 0251, 0259 and 0270).
There is also a political joke referencing the contemporary political relationship between Britain and the USA with the names 'Reagan' and 'Thatcher' placed on the thrones of the seated figures.
