This is an illustration of the gruesome tale of (the dancer) Salome who called for the head of John the Baptist. A powerful woman in the New Testament, in the dynasty of Herod, her marriage to her uncle and then cousin lead her to become a queen, a scene illustrated by many renaissance artists. There is a great deal of detail to see in the background. [See also Cat. No. 0227, unfinished]
