Arachne challenged Athena with her skill at weaving, and did not show sufficient humility so was turned into a spider. This work was an experiment in "moire" effect, using netting covering board, to bring the texture of the fabric to the work, also referencing the concept of weaving. The artist was trying to create movement on an otherwise 2-dimensional surface, and the hue of this image is also a homage to the shame Arachne was put to.
